A typical recipient of the Surviving Spouse Scholarship is an underskilled, undereducated, and low-income single mother in her twenties to mid-thirties with young children.  The scholarship provides financial and emotional support, life skills and self-improvement workshops, referrals to other community services, increased self-esteem, and independence.
